Case Summary
Root Canal
Teeth: 7
Last Cleaning: 05/2006
Case Description
I had a root canal done on my front tooth over 10 years ago. During Hurricane Ike, we had no power but found a restaurant that did so I went and ordered food to go and ate it in the dark. I couldn't see what I was biting into, well, I bit into a super hard crab puff that got stuck between my front tooth and the tooth I received a root canal on. I felt an instant pain I never experienced before and root canal tooth started to rock back and forth. I thought I'd give it a couple of days and the pain will go away and the tooth will fall back in place. I could not find a dentist that was opened bc the power is out for the majority of the city. Each day that passed, I noticed my tooth getting looser and started to fall lower and touching my bottom tooth, making it hard for me to chew because of the pain. In addition the the looseness, I have noticed a foul odor coming from the loose tooth. The odor is only coming from the area where my gumline and root canal tooth meets. There is even a little juice that produces in that area that is foul smelling and horrible tasting as well. Someone, please help. Can my tooth be saved? What is happening and what needs to happen to save my smile and breath?

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

If the tooth had a post and a crown, they may be what has come loose. Unfortunately, the foul smell often means new decay at the crown margin.

I am a Periodontist. I specialize in gum surgery and place dental implants. I practice in different offices in Houston, Spring and The Woodlands with some great restorative dentists. I would be happy to examine you with one of these other doctors, or one of your choice. If the tooth is salvagable, we can determine that. If not, we can discuss extraction and implant placement.

Please email or call.

Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you.

It''''s hard to tell without x-rays or an exam. It is possible you could have fractured the tooth. I would recommend seeing a dentist as soon as you can to evaluate the severity of the damage. I wish I could be of further help but I really don''''t know what is needed without seeing the tooth. If you need an appointment with us, you can call 281-778-8400.
